Mark Hinchliffe (1960-2019)

Message from the Directors and Trustees of the Elmet Trust:

Mark Hinchliffe

It is with the greatest sadness that we report the death of Mark Hinchliffe, who passed away peacefully on 14 November 2019 after a period of illness. Mark was a long-standing and much-loved member and Director of the Elmet Trust, and more recently its Chair.

His contribution to the Trust was immense. One of his many achievements was to secure an impressive array of speakers for the Annual Hughes Birthday Dinner. We were, therefore, delighted when Mark accepted our invitation for him to speak at last year’s event.

Mark corresponded with Ted Hughes, and it was Hughes who inspired him to write his own beautiful poems. It was a pleasure to behold Mark’s knowledge of, and infectious enthusiasm for, Hughes’s work.

It will not be possible to replace Mark. His passing is a huge loss to the Trust, and to the wider Hughes community of which he was a pillar. Our thoughts and our condolences go to Julie and the family.

‘So we found the end of our journey.’
